Reflection on Journals
All of the journals included in this section made me realize some way or another that there is more to writing and research than smply going on google and wikipedia and reading some information and calling it fact to the point where a research paper is written from it without using any other source. The journals included here are all set up in chrinological order starting with the first one I wrote at the top of the list and working their way down. The first one I decided to include in my portfolio is the first journal we did in class. It was an easy read by Malcolm X which I actually enjoyed reading. It was important that the first reading we did was simple because it helped me understand exactly what the proffesor wanted me to include in the following journals. Of course like everything in this life the articles we had to read for our journals got progressively harder which brought us to the article written by Swales about discourse communities. This I believe was the hardest article to read and understand and as I wrote the journal I realized that writing on a concept that you don't have a clear grasp on is extremely challenging and the grade on my journal reflected just that. Of course before the ere silence that comes with the relief of knowing that the storm is over there is chaos. And in the same manner right when I thought the storm was over it only got worse when we were assigned to read Materiality and Genre in the in the study of discourse communities which not only was hard to read but it was also hard to grasp the concepts being discussed. Of course like any good student would do I decided to google the article to see if I could find something to help me understand but ran into nothing, and after running into nothing I decided to talk to my proffessor about the article and asked her how I should approach it and of course like always she sent me to think about it in a different light than what I was doing. This journal was the one that made me realize the importance of the journal assignment to the class because it showed me the importance it had on the succesful completion of the major assignments that followed it and I realized that without reading those articles and understanding what they said writing a genre analysis which was a completely foreign concept to me was going to be missioin impossible. Finally, after grasping the concept of what the role of a journal was and feeling alot more confident about my writing skills my proffesor assigned us Argument as a Conversation by Greene. Of course just like the others it was long, daunting and difficult to read but by this time I was ready for the challenge. So I sat down and disected the article and I wrote what I thought was my best journal yet and when I got the grade it proved that indeed it was the best journal entry I had written the whole semster and at that point I felt like something was achieved. Now of course feel free to go through the journasl yourself and be the judge yourself but keep in mind that it was a hard learning process in which I improved to fail and then improved to understand and finally imrpoved to succeed.
